Casinos – The Place to Scratch That Gambling Itch
Whether you’re looking to lay down your chips at the roulette wheel or put on your best poker face, casinos are the place to scratch that gambling itch. Often combining high stakes and high luxury, these temples of temptation have earned their reputation through a combination of opulent furnishings, top-notch food, awe-inspiring architecture and of course – gambling.
Casinos are generally licensed to offer a variety of gambling activities and are usually combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shops, cruise ships or other tourist attractions. They may also offer sports betting and other forms of entertainment like live music. Some casinos are known for specialized games, such as baccarat (or chemin de fer in the United States), blackjack or trente et quarante in France. In general, most casino games have an inherent long-term house advantage that is known as the vigorish or rake. However, a skillful player can eliminate this edge by employing certain strategies.
The word “casino” is Italian and derived from Casinum, which was a Latin translation for “house of games.” One of the oldest and most famous casinos in the world is Casino di Venezia, located on Venice’s Grand Canal and offering guests free boat rides to the casino during performance intermissions. Casinos have been legalized in a number of American states and are regulated by state and local laws. Many American Indian reservations also operate casinos that are exempt from state-wide antigambling statutes. In some cases, casino gambling is only available to those who are 21 or older.
