The film’s depiction of mob life lacks the pizzazz of Goodfellas, but it has its own appeal. Scorsese’s refusal to draw a line between depiction and endorsement is his hallmark as an artist, and the movie’s genuinely hellacious violence (including a torture-by-vice sequence that had to be trimmed to avoid an NC-17 rating) is both unflinching and sexy. The story is compelling, too. Robert De Niro is excellent, and the way he pays attention to detail as Ace plays the game is mesmerizing. The false bedrock he builds his marriage off of and Nicky’s relentless pursuit of Ginger is one of the more subtly constructed examples of scumbaggery on screen.
