The Basics of Poker

Poker is one of the oldest and most popular card games in the world, played in homes, casinos and over the Internet. It is a game of skill and strategy, and the winner is determined by the highest hand in each hand.

Rules and Basics

In most variations of the game, each player receives a standard pack of cards (usually 52) that are ranked from high to low. The ranks of the cards are based on probability, so higher-ranking hands are more likely to win than lower-ranking ones.

The highest possible hand is a straight flush, made up of five consecutive cards that are not from the same suit. Other hands are also possible, including three of a kind (three cards of the same rank) and two pair (two pairs of identical cards).

A low-ranking hand is called a “nothing” when no two cards in it have the same rank. If two or more people have the same type of nothing hand, it is a tie and the prize is divided evenly.

Players may place an initial contribution, called an ante, into the pot before the cards are dealt. This is an important part of the game’s rules, since it limits the number of chips a player can bet or raise.

When the cards are dealt, each player to the left of the dealer must make a bet by placing into the pot the same number of chips as the last player to bet. Then each player to the left must call, by putting into the pot at least as many chips as they have put in; raise, by putting in more than enough to call; or fold, by putting no chips into the pot and discarding their hand.
