The Basics of Poker

Poker

Basically, Poker is a game of chance. Each player’s goal is to form the highest ranked hand possible. This can be done by betting or folding.

Poker variants have different rules and betting phases. There are five main categories of hands that are ranked according to their value: straight, flush, straight flush, “backdoor flush” and “backdoor straight.”

“Straight” is the sequence of five cards in sequential order. The highest card in the hand gives the hand’s value.

“Straight flush” is the combination of five cards in the same suit. The highest card in the hand beats the second highest card. The best hand wins the pot. The hand is not revealed until the last betting interval.

“Backdoor flush” is achieved by hitting needed cards on the turn and river. The ace is a high or low card, depending on whether it counts high or low in a straight. The jack is a wild card.

“Static and dynamic boards” affect the ranges of post-flop hands. The higher the card ranking, the better the hand.

The best hand in Poker is a hand that contains five cards in a sequence, the same suit, and a higher ranking card than the highest card in the hand. This is the simplest hand to form and is the most likely to win the pot.

The first betting phase begins with the ante. This is a small bet that is typically $1 or $5. Once the ante is paid, each player is dealt two cards. The player who first makes the bet is called the bettor. If no bets are made, the bettor is said to “check” or “stay in” as he or she will not bet again.
